The Silk Cocoons

Silk comes from the cocoons of Bombyx mori, the silk worm. Threads from a number of cocoons are combined to form strands of raw silk. There are, however, some types of silk that are still woven on traditional looms.

The raw silk is dyed and put through other finishing touches. The sustainable development aspect of the project means that the develop won’t compromise future generations’ abilities to meet their own growing needs, a definition ‘stamped’ by the United Nations. This marks previous trends where farmers were reduced to cutting down forests in a bid to grow cocoa and make a living, contributing to local water contamination and eroding the soil’s natural fertility.

Both Olam International and the Rainforest Alliance will work together to invest in the training of farmers – another important aspect of sustainable development – and aim to double the yields of cocoa growth in three years, whilst also planting nearly 250 hectares of new trees to restore the local forests.

The positive step of this project also happens in the context of substantial growth in demand for cocoa, which is likely to require an extra one million metric tons by 2020. This makes it even more essential for cocoa bean growers and large corporates to commit now to finding ways of meeting this demand sustainably, with one eye towards the future of the industry and the likelihood of still growing demand as the world’s population continues to increase.

This current project is working with thirteen communities and will train 2000 farms, with growers being able to certify their yields with the Rainforest Alliance. This will bring a premium in the market, helping the farmers to raise their standards of living.
